Airfoils and Types of Airfoils

The cross-sectional shape or profile that is obtained by the intersection of an airplane wing with a perpendicular plane is known as an airfoil. Airfoils are of different shapes are sizes depending on the specifications and configuration of the intended aircraft.

There are three basic types of airfoils.

Semi-symmetrical Airfoils

Symmetrical Airfoils

Flat Bottom Airfoils

An airfoil can be either positive camber or a negative camber.

Semi-symmetrical airfoils have the highest Cl max out of three types of airfoils.
