Aircraft structure can be monocoque or semi-monocoque depending on the construction technique used and the amount of strength to weight that is required. An aircraft structure can be made really strong but it would be very heavy. Heavy enough even that the airplane won't fly. So, a compromise has to be made between strength and weight. Aircraft structures are intelligently designed minimizing weight and adding strength. The primary material used in Aircraft structure is aluminum. Sometimes added strength is given by steel. Titanium is also used in many aircraft frames. With the advent of composite materials aircraft structures mostly light airplanes and UAV systems are using the composite materials in there construction. They are light weight and there strength qualities are good. |
